This has happened to me more times than I care to admit, when I was a kid and camping with my family. The restroom building was always lit like a beacon, making it easy to find in the dark. However, the lights would destroy night vision and upon exiting the building the uniform total blackness of the campground would offer no clue about the direction back to camp.
